My lessons learnt - How to pick a good company name

Pretty much common sense but writing them down here so I’ll refer to them next time I need to.

-          Keep it nice and short, with mobile phones no one likes typing long names

-          Avoid numbers if possible unless it’s very clear why.

-          Make it a real word, or short acryonym that’s easy to remember

-          Ask other people on their initial reaction to the name your after along with a few others that you’re not keen on to get honest feedback.  Friends mean well but are the hardest to get meaningful feedback from as they’ll sugar coat/dilute any poor initial reactions.

-          Relevant to what you’re doing

-          Keep in mind any logo you may want to use with the word

-          Check the word in other languages for any unexpected meanings

o   Ensure you don’t end up with the expertsexchange.com by accident

-          Ensure the .com domain name is available.  If you want global in future this is imperative

-          Take a look at google’s stats on http://www.google.com/insights

o   Aim for a low searched for word so it’s easy to get a good ranking

o   Ideally find a word with a trend upwards.  (E.g. take a look at Epic, they’ve nailed that one!)
